Manufacturing Excellence / Technical Guide

From Tungsten Powder to Precision Cutting Tools

Discover how cemented carbide indexable inserts are manufactured, from powder preparation and precision pressing to sintering, grinding, edge preparation, optional coating and final inspection.

POWDER METALLURGY PRECISION GRINDING SURFACE COATING QUALITY CONTROL

How Are Carbide Cutting Inserts Made?

Cemented carbide cutting inserts are manufactured through a carefully controlled powder metallurgy process. Tungsten carbide provides high hardness and wear resistance, while a metallic binder, commonly cobalt, contributes strength and toughness.

Every stage can influence the final tool's dimensional accuracy, cutting-edge quality, wear resistance and machining performance. The exact production route depends on insert geometry, carbide grade and application requirements.

01
RAW MATERIAL PREPARATION

Tungsten Carbide Powder

Preparing the essential carbide raw material
Tungsten carbide powder for cemented carbide cutting inserts
STEP 01 / CARBURIZATION

Tungsten Carbide Powder Preparation

Tungsten powder reacts with a carbon source under controlled conditions to produce tungsten carbide (WC) powder. Powder purity, grain size and particle distribution influence the microstructure and properties of the finished carbide grade.

02
POWDER PROCESSING

Batching & Wet Milling

Controlling composition and powder uniformity
Ball milling and mixing of tungsten carbide and cobalt powders
STEP 02 / MIXING & MILLING

Precision Batching and Wet Milling

WC powder, cobalt binder and selected additives are accurately proportioned and milled to achieve a uniform mixture. The formulation and milling conditions are selected to obtain the material characteristics required for the target carbide grade.

POWDER CONDITIONING

Spray Drying & Granulation

STEP 03 / GRANULATION

Spray Drying and Granulation

The prepared slurry is spray-dried into granules with suitable flow and filling characteristics. Proper granulation helps distribute powder more consistently within the pressing die and supports repeatable compact density.

04
FORMING

Precision Pressing

Forming the initial insert geometry
Precision pressing of cemented carbide indexable inserts
STEP 04 / COMPACTION

Precision Die Pressing

Granulated powder is compacted in precision dies to form the insert's basic geometry. Depending on the design, the die can create the outline, center hole and selected chipbreaker features. The pressed green compact remains fragile before sintering.

THERMAL PROCESSING

Debinding & Sintering

Developing density, hardness and toughness

STEP 05 / SINTERING

Debinding and Sintering

Where applicable, forming agents are removed before or during the controlled thermal cycle. Sintering densifies the compact and develops the required cemented carbide microstructure. Controlled shrinkage and atmosphere are important for final properties and dimensional consistency.

PRECISION FINISHING

Precision Grinding

Achieving specified dimensions and surface finish
Diamond wheel precision grinding of carbide cutting inserts
STEP 06 / GRINDING

Precision Face and Profile Grinding

Diamond grinding wheels are used where required to finish specified surfaces, thicknesses and profiles. Grinding helps achieve the dimensional tolerances, flatness and seating accuracy required by the insert design. Not every insert requires identical grinding operations.

Dimensional control and surface finishing
07
EDGE ENGINEERING

Cutting Edge Preparation

Controlling edge geometry and consistency
Brush finishing and edge preparation of carbide cutting inserts
STEP 07 / EDGE PREPARATION

Brushing, Deburring and Edge Treatment

Depending on the product, brushing, honing or other controlled methods remove unwanted burrs and establish the required cutting-edge condition. Edge preparation is selected to balance sharpness, edge strength and resistance to chipping.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Cleaning & Surface Preparation

Removing contaminants before subsequent processing
Industrial cleaning of precision cemented carbide inserts
STEP 08 / CLEANING

Cleaning and Surface Preparation

Inserts are cleaned to remove residual grinding debris, oil and other contaminants. When coating is required, additional substrate preparation may be used to support coating quality and consistency.

09
SURFACE ENGINEERING

Optional Surface Coating

Selecting a coating system for the application
CVD or PVD coating furnace for carbide cutting inserts
STEP 09 / COATING

CVD or PVD Coating

Depending on the insert grade and intended cutting application, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), physical vapor deposition (PVD) or an uncoated finish may be selected. Coating systems can improve wear resistance and thermal performance under suitable cutting conditions.

Coating selected by product requirements
Technical note: Coating is not mandatory for every carbide insert. The coating system and process sequence depend on the substrate, grade, geometry and intended application.
10
QUALITY ASSURANCE

Final Quality Inspection

Verifying product conformity before release
Precision measurement and visual inspection of carbide inserts
STEP 10 / INSPECTION

Dimensional and Visual Inspection

Final inspection verifies the specified dimensions, geometry, surface condition and applicable coating requirements. Depending on the product, checks may include thickness, inscribed circle, hole dimensions, edge integrity and other characteristics defined by the quality plan.

Measurement and quality verification
11
FINISHED PRODUCTS

Marking & Packaging

Protecting finished inserts for delivery
Finished carbide cutting inserts identified and protected in packaging
STEP 11 / PACKAGING

Product Identification and Packaging

Approved inserts are identified by the appropriate model, grade or product information and packed to protect cutting edges from impact, contamination and handling damage. Finished products are prepared for storage and delivery.
